Raised in California, Avi Shragai's interest in Gong Fu began at the age of twelve. Studying at a small school near his home he developed a love of martial arts and tucked away the idea of
studying Gong Fu intensively in the back of his mind.
Upon finishing high school Avi decided he wanted to delay going to university, choosing instead to save money for traveling. One year later, after living in Israel, Greece, and Italy, Avi
returned to the United States, this time with the intention of making his way to China.
With the highest recommendation of his friend David Wei Avi sought out Master Yuan's academy and arrived in Wudang in July of 2008. The practice, both in its intensity and focus, captured his
imagination and challenged his body. Master Yuan commanded his respect and admiration as an incredibly skilled, loving teacher. Though his original intention was to stay for just six months, when
Master Yuan announced the traditional program he changed his plans immediately.
Now - following a return home and a year of non-stop work - Avi is in Wudang again, this time for at least five years of rigorous study.
Practice with the traditional class is invigorating, frustrating, immeasurably rewarding, and a million other things in turn. During his time in Wudang he looks forward to deepening his skill as
a martial artist and understanding of Daoist culture and, through practice, becoming a better human being. When his time at Master Yuan's academy is over Avi hopes to share the skill and
experience he will have gained with others.
